The thermal springs complex known from classical sources as Aquae Ceretane became recognized in the summer of 1988 in the locality of Sasso Furbara a few kilometres from Via Aurelia. It is a vast complex comprising various buildings (the calidarium, the tepidarium and other facilities) and it is naturally connected to customs involving the healthy characteristics of the water there; there is a dedication inscribed on a slab of marble with the expression "To Jupiter and Hercules of the Ceretane Springs".
At present the settlement is not easy to visit, due to the fact that it is private property and also because maintenance work and consolidation of the area is in progress.
Visits are rare but can be arranged by appointment with the Archaeological Superintendent for Southern Etruria. Please call 06 3226571.
