The Great Tumuli

The external Tumuli are open to the public twice a day at fixed times. For information please contact the ticket office. Splendid examples of funeral architecture, these tombs are characterized by their monumental structure and the abundance of decorations which adorn them. One fine example is the Tomb of the Shields and Seats. The walls are decorated with low relief motifs and interpreted as parade shields, symbol of an aristocratic family from the middle of the 6th century BC.

The Common Tombs are only open to the public by appointment from the Superintendent of south Etruria. There are 5 noble hypogea from the Hellenic age which are similar to the Tomb of Reliefs in their structure and internal layout. Which can be traced back to a period between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. They are situated on the west side near the boundary. Of these the Tomb of the Tarquini is particular; the sepulchre is built on two levels and there is evidence to suggest that more than 50 families shared this tomb over several generations.

In proximity of the western decline of the plain there is a small burial site in decline from the 7th century. It has only one tomb, unusual in conformation. This is the Tomb of the 5 Seats. Its name derives from presence of the five seats with high backs and footrests placed along the left wall of the sepulchre. Upon these there would have been 5 statures representing the figures of the ancestors ready to welcome the defunct and share in the banquets of the nest life.

The ticket office of the Necropolis of Banditaccia is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 am to an hour before sunset.

Visitors under the age of 18 and over 65 enter free of charge, 18 - 25 €2 and 25-65 €4.
