CHURCH OF SANT'ANTONIO ABATE

A small church erected in the 11th century built close to the circle of the wall and was probably part of a monastery.

Nearby there is a row of towers ( perhaps bell towers which today have been partially restores. Leading up to the church there is a terrace in front of the façade of the entrance.

Inside the church has 3 naves, the central one is characterised by a double ceiling while the lateral naves have a barrel vault ceiling. The walls and the pillars of the naves are painted to resemble a covering of white marble slate.

On the counter façade, along the left wall during restoration of the only apse and one of the pillars, traces and glimpses of alfrescos from different periods and qualities were revealed dating back to the 14yth and 15th centuries. Art critics Federico Zeri and Antonio Pinelli recognized a Madonna and child on her throne between two saints painted by Lawrence of Viterbo dating the painting to around 1472. A great figure of the Lord in Heaven adorns the Catin apse. Above the high altar there is a wooden statue of the Patron Saint presumably from the 6th century.
