THE SASSO

Here there is tangible evidence of the medieval period that dates back to the 12th century. The original castle was built in a slightly lower position to the where the present castle stands today but there are only a few traces of it remaining.

The castle or baronial palace is surrounded by numerous houses and a Santa Croce Church from which the square in front of it takes its name.

The complex was built in the 16th century, commissioned by the Patrizi family: there is a cruciform courtyard divided into two parts built around an access tower. The main one opens out between the main battlement walls which are mounted by the family's Coat of Arms. The building has an internal courtyard with a portico and a garden. The small church was founded by the Marquis Filippo di Patrizi in the same century. It has a single chamber and a bell tower on the front. The chapel of the Madonna was added on 1642.
